Soorma

Soorma Review

So another biopic is out in India and since it has been raining biopics for last years, producers know what is sold here. Soorma is yet another biopic of yet another hero India has produced, Sandeep Singh. The captain of Indian hockey team. I have watched just one match of hockey in my entire life and still I know the name Sandeep Singh since I was just 13 years old. He is a very famous player and he definitely deserved this reward. So getting further, let's see what this movie has to tell.

Synopsis

Soorma is about a hockey player whose dream was not to become an Indian hockey player at start but due to a girl he started liking, who played hockey, he thought hockey would be the best chance to meet her everyday. Although his coach was very strict and rude towards every player, he was much more strict towards Sandeep due to his casual behaviour and lethargic nature. The daily practice of scaring away the birds in his farm by drag flicking the ball with hockey made him a drag flick expert. He was noticed by his brother who also knew that this local coach will never let him play. So he sends him to Indian Institute of Sports and when the coach there Vijay Raaz sees his drag flick, he gets very impressed.
This leads him to the entry of Indian Hockey team and then one day when he was going for the world cup, he gets shot by mistake. Due to the bullet strike position, his lower half of the body is paralysed and gets him bedridden for three months. After three months, he decided to move to Holland for recovery which is completely sanctioned by Indian Hockey Federation. He returns fully recovered and enters Team India once again.

My Opinion

The film starts strong and has funny moments also. The film is grippy and executes the story very well in a very good way. The director has tried to join all the pieces of Sandeep Singh's journey in a very beautiful manner but I felt the ending was not as gripping as it should be. In the end it feels the movie is in a rush of being completed and gets finished abnormally. Sandeep hits a goal and that's the end. The ending was really not proper. Also, I felt the matches did not show clear picture of how great Sandeep Singh is. The matches were not as interesting and nail biting as they should have been. But since it is a story of a great legend. I recommend this movie.
